Fish vendor drowns as raft with husband, son onboard capsizes in Ilocos Sur


BANTAY, Ilocos Sur – A fish vendor drowned after the bamboo raft she was riding with her husband and her son capsized on the Abra River in Barangay San Mariano here on Friday, Nov. 8, at the height of typhoon “Marce.”

Rhon Arquelada, head of the Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO), identified the victim as Mary Ann Daria, 47, from Barangay San Mariano.

Arqueleda said the victim, her husband, Noli, and son, Edward were crossing the Abra River  toward the municipality of Santa, this province, town to look for their goats when it capsized on the middle of the river due to the strong current.

Edward regained control of the raft and rescued his father but his mother went missing.

Arqueleda said search and retrieval operations continue to find Mary Ann.
