TNT is not going into the Game 6 of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup Finals sitting on its laurels – definitely not in a contest where they finally have the chance to claim its spot atop the league anew and claim a second-straight title in the conference where it reigned that last it was staged.
TNT seeks PBA Govs' Cup coronation
At a glance
TNT is not going into Game 6 of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup Finals sitting on its laurels.
Definitely not against a determined Ginebra side.
A coronation is what the Tropang Giga are envisioning at the end of the clash scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, Nov. 8, but the Barangay Ginebra Kings would want none of that as they seek to drag the series to a final showdown on Sunday, Nov. 10.
TNT head coach Chot Reyes preached to his wards to elevate their games to a higher level where they are expecting a big fightback from Ginebra.
“At this point in the series, there’s very little each team can do na bago e. It’s just a matter of being able to play better, play harder and execute more efficiently,” said Reyes after his team’s 99-72 win in the pivotal Game 5.
“We have to be ready. We know Ginebra is going to come out with a lot more energy and we have to be able to match that if not out energize them because we are not underestimating (them) by any means, not by a long shot,” he added.
After squandering a 2-0 series lead, TNT went back to what it does best – playing defense – limiting Ginebra to just 13 and 15 points in the middle quarters of Game 5 to break the game wide open and regain footing in the Finals series.
A testament to the stifling defense was Justin Brownlee’s statline, finishing only with eight points – a career-low scoring – on a poor 3-of-13 clip.
He, however, sat out the entire fourth quarter when the game was already far out of reach for Ginebra, enough to convince Reyes that the resident Kings import will have a huge bounce back game next time out.
“We are fortunate that he had an off night and we know it would not persist in the next game and coach Tim already rested him early, kinda preparing him for a one-step backward two steps forward attack in the next game,” Reyes said of Brownlee.
“We just need to be ready. We know he is going to come out hard as is the entire Ginebra team. We just need to make sure to stay on our toes and be prepared for a big Ginebra fightback,” he added.
Of course, raring to end it all right there and then are the Tropa led by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson who is seeking his second PBA title. TNT, as a franchise, is looking to claim its 10th crown as well as Reyes who is also eyeing his sixth with the Tropang Giga and also 10th in his career.
