As the Information and Communications Technology head of the Manila Bulletin, I've witnessed many technological advancements, but my experience with DITO Telecommunity has been particularly eye-opening. Since its launch in 2021, DITO has promised to deliver true 5G technology, and I was eager to see how this claim translated into real-world experience.

Understanding DITO's 5G deployment

My first step was to explore the difference between 5G Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) networks. SA 5G is an end-to-end 5G that uses a 5G core network. While more expensive to deploy because it requires new infrastructure built entirely on 5G specifications, it gives users the full benefits of 5G, including ultra-low latency and higher data speeds. On the other hand, while NSA 5G can provide higher data speeds than 4G, it doesn't fully utilize the capabilities of 5G, such as ultra-low latency. NSA 5G only leverages existing 4G LTE infrastructure and uses a 4G core network and 5G radio access network.

DITO's vision for 5G wireless broadband is exciting. As demand for high-speed internet grows, especially in underserved areas, the 5G wireless broadband market is projected to grow significantly. In conversations with DITO representatives, they emphasized their goal to bridge the digital divide—something that aligns with the broader objective of improving access to digital resources in the Philippines.

DITO's 5G infrastructure is built entirely on a 5G SA foundation, unlike other providers that just leverage their existing 4G networks. This was clear from the moment I connected my device. The speeds I experienced were significantly faster—often reaching up to 639 Mbps, compared to the typical 75 Mbps on 4G.

Wireless vs. fiber: my experience

When comparing DITO's 5G wireless broadband to traditional fiber connections, I found the wireless setup to be very convenient. Installing the wireless modem was simple—plug it in, and I was online without the hassle of dealing with cables. The flexibility of being able to move the modem around for optimal signal was a major benefit. This made me appreciate DITO’s 5G even more—it’s designed to be incredibly user-friendly and inclusive, while still delivering top-tier connection quality for everyone. I found that DITO's wireless service matched fiber speeds while offering greater convenience, particularly for my mobile lifestyle.

Experiencing the benefits of true 5G

Connecting to DITO's network brought immediate, noticeable improvements, especially in terms of low latency. With DITO's commitment to delivering an average broadband speed of 357 Mbps, I’ve been able to fully experience the advantages of 5G technology. The connection is smooth and highly responsive, with far less lag, which is perfect for gaming and live streaming, making everything feel more stable overall. DITO's dedicated to optimizing the user experience, minimizing delays, and ensuring everything runs efficiently and seamlessly.

DITO’s dedication to digital excellence

My experience with DITO Telecommunity has given me a new perspective on what true 5G technology can offer. It's not just about speed but about the potential for transforming everyday lives through dependable connectivity. It’s clear that DITO is raising the standard of mobile networks here and focuses on expanding connectivity across the Philippines. With over 7,000 cell sites and plans to cover 87% of the country by year's end, they are working towards ensuring reliable internet access for more Filipinos. This effort is essential for supporting digital literacy and providing greater access to information and opportunities.

DITO’s offering more affordable options for 5G home internet, which is great for families who need reliable, fast internet without breaking the bank. And for businesses, they’re already using 5G to power small enterprises, airports, and even large corporations, which shows how this technology is benefiting not just individuals but entire industries. It’s exciting to be a part of this change and see how DITO continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with 5G.
