Passion meets purpose: The Project PH story

A quiet revolution is taking place in a world where fast fashion dominates. It’s led by individuals who are passionate about style and about making a positive impact on the environment. One such individual is Lyca Faustino, a mother and entrepreneur who has found a way to merge her love for fashion with a commitment to sustainability. Through her creative endeavors, she’s showing how small steps can lead to meaningful change.

Lyca and family

For Lyca, the journey into entrepreneurship began during the pandemic, a time of uncertainty for many. I call them “pandepreneurs;” individuals who became successful in business during Covid. What started as a simple hobby evolved into something more. “Creating my own unique outfits turned into a business that stems from my heart and soul,” Lyca said. Her brand is built around the principles of slow fashion and upcycling, with a mission to spread awareness about the environmental impact of fashion.

But the path wasn’t always smooth. Like many entrepreneurs, she faced challenges. One of her biggest hurdles came after the birth of her child. “Project PH was just one year old when I gave birth. Finding the right balance was tough, but my supportive husband helped me through it,” she recalled. Together, they pushed through the difficulties, driven by determination and the belief in what they were creating.

Sustainability is key

Faustino’s approach to fashion isn’t just about creating beautiful pieces and making mindful choices. She advocates for thrift-flipping and reusing textiles to minimize waste, creating a brand that promotes a love for slow fashion. “I want to show people that fashion can be both stylish and sustainable,” she said. By doing so, she hopes to contribute to a greener future for the fashion industry in the Philippines.

Project PH initially started as a way to survive the pandemic, but over time, it evolved into a passion project for Lyca. “We did this to survive the pandemic at first, then it turned into a passion. Basically, it became my passion project,” she explained.

The materials, such as katsa (flour sacks), are sourced from local bakeries around Tagaytay, Amadeo, Calamba, Rizal, and Manila. What makes Project PH even more special is the team behind it. The family of Lyca’s close associate, “Ate Ga,” washes the fabric and sews each piece from scratch. “We’re so happy and grateful to have met them. They’ve even been able to buy land because of the brand, and hopefully, we can help even more people in the future,” she said with pride.

Her influences come from local and international icons such as Shaira Luna, a photographer and stylist, and Naomi Roestel, a singer and model. “I love how both of them share a love for fashion and thrift shops,” Lyca noted, reflecting on how their work aligns with her values of creativity and sustainability.

The power of community

As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated world, Lyca understands the importance of finding the right support system.

“Women are like chameleons; we are incredibly powerful and adaptable,” she reflected. Her community of close friends, many of whom are also involved in business, have been instrumental in her journey. “I believe in choosing your tribe wisely,” she said, emphasizing how important it is to surround yourself with people with the same mindset and goals.

Lyca recently attended a ‘Girl Boss Event’ where female entrepreneurs shared their stories. The sense of belonging and empowerment resonated deeply with her. “It’s wonderful to be part of a community that celebrates women’s empowerment and supports each other’s passion,” she said.

Motherhood and entrepreneurship

Being a mother has shaped her approach to both life and business. Her greatest fear, she admits, is not having enough autonomy and flexibility to devote quality time to her ideas and business. However, she finds moments of peace and reflection through activities like skating, sketching, and spending time outdoors. These are the times when she reconnects with her purpose and finds balance.

Motherhood has also inspired her to be a role model for her daughter, Summer. When asked what advice she would give her, Lyca offers a heartfelt message: “Embrace your freedom and discover the wonders that bring joy to your heart. Acquiring knowledge and gaining practical experience are valuable assets.” It’s a message that reflects both her personal philosophy and her approach to business.

Looking ahead

Lyca’s journey as a mompreneur is far from over. As Project PH continues to grow, she is excited about the future. Collaborations with fellow entrepreneurs are opening up new markets, including bringing Project PH to the US She’s also looking forward to more opportunities and events that will keep her energized and engaged in her mission.

Empowered by community: Lyca finds strength in a network of women supporting each other's passion.

For Lyca, the journey is as important as the destination. “If you have an idea, take action,” she advises fellow moms who want to start their own businesses. “Even small steps can make a difference. Life is not about rushing through it, but about savoring the journey.”

As she continues navigating motherhood and entrepreneurship challenges, Lyca’s story serves as an inspiration—a reminder that with passion, purpose, and a supportive community, it‛s possible to turn dreams into reality.

Lyca's story reminds us of the profound strength within every mother—the ability to nurture, create, and lead. She embodies the balance between motherhood and entrepreneurship, showing that success isn’t just about building a business but also about personal growth, self-discovery, and making a lasting impact on the lives of others.
