The Southern Police District (SPD) urged the public to remain vigilant following an incident involving an alleged robbery in Barangay San Isidro, Makati City on Sunday, October 6, which serves as a reminder of potential risks associated with ride-hailing services “kambal-plaka.”

According to SPD Director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang, a 24-year-old female victim booked a ride using a ride-hailing app at around 1:20 a.m. from her house in Baclaran, Parañaque City, going to Makati City.

The victim claimed that during the trip, the driver identified as “Ronald” changed the route from the expected direction and suddenly stopped the vehicle, then brandished a pair of scissors and declared a holdup.

Fortunately, Yang said that the boyfriend of the victim was on the phone and overheard the alarming situation that prompted him to alert the police.

Authorities conducted an investigation to arrest the suspect, which led them to discover that the suspect only copied the motorcycle's plate number from a certain “Jethro,” who was the real owner of the vehicle with the same plate number.

According to them, the suspect is using the vehicle with the copied plate number for illegal activities.

They then found and convinced the suspect to surrender.

Yang said the victim did not file a complaint against the suspect but instead requested that the incident be documented in the police blotter to raise awareness among other commuters using ride-hailing apps.

The chief said since they committed to enhancing public safety and are actively working to address these concerns, they issued some essential safety tips for commuters to ensure their safety while using transportation services:

  • Verify driver and vehicle details. Always check the driver’s name, photo, and vehicle details (make, model, color, and license plate) before getting in. Match the information provided by the app with what you see.
  • Share your ride information. Use the ride-hailing app’s feature to share your trip details with a friend or family member. Keep them updated about your location and expected arrival time.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off about the driver or the vehicle, don’t hesitate to cancel the ride. Look for alternate transportation if you feel uncomfortable.
  • Sit in the back seat. Whenever possible, sit in the back seat for more personal space and to allow an easier exit if needed.
  • Keep personal items secure. Keep bags and personal items close to you, and avoid displaying valuables such as phones, tablets, or jewelry.
  • Avoid distractions. Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid using headphones or getting engrossed in your phone while waiting for your ride.
  • Plan your route. Familiarize yourself with the route you’ll be taking. If possible, use a map app to track your journey.
  • Exit in safe areas. Ask the driver to drop you off in a well-lit and populated area, especially if you’re traveling at night.
  • Use trusted services. Stick to reputable ride-hailing apps and services that prioritize safety and have a good track record.
  • Report suspicious behavior. If you notice any suspicious behavior from a driver or feel unsafe during a ride, report it to the ride-hailing service and local authorities immediately.
