The Department of Tourism (DOT) has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Republic of Korea for the strengthening of tourism partnership aimed at increasing visitor arrivals and enhance economic ties.

DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco and South Korea's Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Yu In-chon signed the agreement at Malacañang Palace, with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.'s and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol serving as witnesses.

The MOU covers the period of 2024 to 2029.

"This updated agreement builds on the cooperation established in 2006 and focuses on key areas such as the exchange of tourism professionals, joint promotional efforts, and initiatives to enhance tourism safety," said Frasco.

She said both nations are committed to boosting tourist arrivals, particularly by enhancing the steady influx of South Korean visitors to the Philippines, which remains the top source of international tourists.

“This partnership not only strengthens tourism ties but also ensures mutual benefits for the Philippines and South Korea as leading destinations for travelers seeking rich cultural experiences and world-class offerings,” Frasco said.

She said significant aspect of the renewed program is its emphasis on sustainability, green technology, and the development of emerging tourism destinations.

The two countries will implement these initiatives through a Joint Working Group, facilitating collaboration across various sectors, including hotels, resorts, and tourism investments.

The importance of South Korea to the Philippine tourism sector is highlighted by the arrival of over 1.23 million South Korean tourists since January 2024, accounting for 27.16 percent of total foreign visitor arrivals.
