Transmission service provider National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has reported that there are more than 100 projects under the Transmission Development Plan (TDP) that will be rolled out until 2050.
In a briefing on Thursday, Nov. 14, the NGCP said that it has already presented the TDP to its energy stakeholders to address the needs of the power grid to minimize and avoid transmission-related outages, ensuring energy reliability and stability.
Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, NGCP assistant vice president for public relations, stated that the projects in development are worth over P600 billion.
“[There is more than] P600 billion worth of capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects in the pipeline, ready for implementation,” she told reporters.
According to the transmission firm, the 2024 to 2050 TDP would act as a critical roadmap to a more sustainable and efficient power grid system over the next few years.
“Just imagine how big P600 billion is. In the last 15 years, we have injected P340 billion. The investments will grow due to the developments, and this is the level we needed before,” Perez-Alabanza stated.
She added that the influx of renewable energy (RE) projects, among others, would climb investments further.
Additionally, the NGCP has presented that there are 13 major grid developments across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, with seven being in the Visayas region.
Six of those major projects have been approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), while the rest await regulatory decision.
In Luzon, two major grid developments are in pre-construction and two are under construction. The Visayas has four projects under construction and three in pre-construction, while Mindanao has two major grid projects underway.
Recently, the NGCP has conducted an annual public consultation drive to seek input from energy stakeholders such as the Department of Energy (DOE), National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), Philippine Market Corporation (PEMC), Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP), Manila Electric Company (Meralco), and other power generators and consumers nationwide.
“These sessions provide detailed updates on the projects approved by the ERC, affected areas and provinces, and estimated target completion dates,” NGCP said. “[We] remain dedicated to enhancing the nation’s power grid infrastructure, prioritizing sustainability, efficiency, and resilience to support the Philippines’ growing energy needs.”
