More people from Cagayan flee ‘Leon’


More than 8,000 individuals have sought shelter in Cagayan as super typhoon “Leon” (international name “Kong-Rey”) moved closer to Batanes on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 30.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said 2,817 families or 8,228 individuals have fled their homes.

Two-thousand, four-hundred eighty-one families or 7,127 individuals are staying in evacuation centers and 381 or 1,144 persons sought shelter with their relatives.

The PDRRMO conducted pre-emptive evacuation in Barangay Caroan, Gonzaga due to the threat of storm surge. Forty-seven families or 135 persons were moved to higher ground.

Meanwhile, huge waves spawned by Leon slammed into beach resorts in the coastal town of Santa Ana. 

Videos posted by the police showed heavy rain pounding and sea water entering cottages.

Police urged the people to evacuate to safer grounds.

Santa Ana is under storm signal No. 3. The rest of the province was placed under signal No. 2.

The PDRRM assured they continue to monitor the province to ensure the people’s safety.
