What makes the eSIM different?

At a glance

  • eSIMs allow users to activate cellular plans without a physical SIM, enabling multiple numbers and profiles on one device, ideal for work or travel.

  • By eliminating physical SIM cards, eSIMs reduce plastic waste, supporting eco-conscious choices.

  • With embedded SIMs, devices are easier to track if lost or stolen, unlike removable SIM cards.

  • Philippine providers like Globe, Smart, and Dito offer eSIM options for postpaid and prepaid customers, making them widely accessible.

As cellular phone owners, we are too familiar with the SIM (or subscriber identity module) card. It stores and authenticates a person’s identity as a user of a device. Over the years, the structure – and features – of SIM cards have evolved from a Mini, Macro, Nano SIM to the eSIM or embedded SIM that was introduced in 2016.

An eSIM (and its software) is permanently “attached” to a device. Think of it as a digital version of the physical SIM card inserted into your mobile phone or tablet. An eSIM enables a user to activate cellular plans without needing a physical SIM, and to access all the information connected to a gadget through it. Several mobile numbers can be simultaneously housed in a single mobile phone, smartwatch, or tablet. Depending on your gadget, you can use up to two profiles at the same time.

Is an eSIM for you? Telco company Globe lists three reasons for its subscribers to go for eSIMs, including the ability to connect several gadgets under one number (for postpaid users), being more eco-conscious by removing the need for physical SIMs, and managing multiple profiles on the go, if you need to switch mobile numbers for work or for travel. Global eSIM travel provider Saily adds that travelers can purchase eSIMs that connect them to local carriers in their destination, so they do not have to worry about roaming fees. Globe and subsidiary TM (Touch Mobile) offer eSIMs on several devices for both postpaid and prepaid users.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) offers eSIMs to both postpaid and prepaid customers as well. Interested customers can visit any Smart Store, present requirements such as the physical SIM to be replaced with an eSIM, a valid government ID, and (for prepaid customers) pay a fee of P99. The company also offers eSIMs with its prepaid cards. These have inclusions like free data and free calls and texts to all networks. Smart’s sister company Talk ‘N Text (TNT) also offers eSIMs for P89.

Dito Telecommunity provides eSIM services with the following inclusions such as 9GB all-access data, unlimited text to all networks, and 150 minutes of calls to other networks. On its website, customers are given steps to avail of the Dito eSIM: Check for device compatibility, purchase an eSIM, register, and activation. According to the company, eSIM advantages include convenience due to the quick and easy activation and security as there is less risk of theft, hacking, or loss.

A device with an eSIM can be tracked in case it is lost or stolen, whereas physical SIMs can be removed, reducing the possibility of having to use apps such as Apple’s “Find My Phone,” in case you lose possession of your device. While some people appreciate this Apple feature, others do not feel comfortable with the possibility of being tracked easily.

Here are a few reminders if you’re considering getting on the eSIM wagon. If you part with a device with an eSIM, make sure that you delete or transfer the eSIM account associated with it. Remember that eSIMs cannot be “removed” from the gadget, so be extra careful when you are selling it, giving it to someone, or even having it repaired. Even letting someone borrow a device for a few hours or days can give them access to your information and network. Second, before deciding to get an eSIM, check your device’s compatibility with your telco. Phones such as the Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus no longer have slots for physical SIMs. It’s best to be prepared if you plan to upgrade your device soon. Also, it’s recommended to use a PIN code or to enable biometric authentication to protect the data in your eSIM. This way, you can manage it remotely and transfer it to another device – in case you lose your phone, for example.
