334,000 affected by ‘Kristine’ in Western Visayas


ILOILO CITY – Severe tropical storm “Kristine” affected nearly 334,000 persons across Western Visayas region, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-6 said on Sunday, Oct. 27.

The regional Office of Civil Defense-6, which chairs the Western Visayas Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-6, has yet to release updated data as it awaits approval from its Central Office in Quezon City.

The DSWD-6, a member of the RDRRMC-6, said that 85,367 families were affected during the week-long stormy weather.

More than 1,000 barangays were affected in the region comprised of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces as well as the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.

Many of those affected had their houses destroyed by Kristine’s strong winds or flooded by intermittent heavy rainfall. Classes and many sea-based trips were cancelled.

The region is bracing for another rainy week with the entry of tropical storm “Leon.”
