The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has reopened the Lopez-Catanauan section of the Maharlika Highway to heavy vehicles, addressing critical access issues following landslides triggered by Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine”.

During a situation briefing with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in Malacañang on Friday, Oct. 25, DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan said restoring connectivity is essential for delivering aid and supplies to the affected regions.

While the highway is now accessible, Bonoan acknowledged ongoing risks, particularly in Quezon Province, where recent rains have saturated the soil.

Marcos also highlighted the emergence of landslides in areas previously deemed safe, including Batangas.

“Sa mga area na hindi pa nakakita ng landslide noon, nag-landslide na ngayon. Wala na talagang pupuntahan iyong tubig (In areas that had not experienced landslides before, landslides have occurred now. There is really nowhere for the water to go),” Marcos said, citing the urgent need for preventive measures due to the region’s saturated soil.

To enhance road safety and resilience, DPWH is implementing a comprehensive response plan that includes immediate road clearing followed by a permanent restoration program targeting high-risk areas.

Bonoan affirmed the department’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure especially in vulnerable areas to mitigate future storm impacts and ensure reliable transport routes for affected communities.
