ILOILO CITY – Strong winds and intermittent heavy rain from severe tropical storm “Kristine” brought damage to world-famous Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan province.

“Fortunately, no one is hurt. People are safe,” said Malay Mayor Frolibar Bautista.

Bautista said that the Malay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office is still receiving reports of damage on the island.

Strong winds damaged the roof of the covered walkway of the Cagban Jetty Port, the main port for tourists and residents on the resort-island.

Strong winds also topped electric tricycles. A grocery in a mini-mall was flooded.

Bautista said that the Malay Municipal Tourism Office is responding to the needs of tourists.

Boracay is accessible by a short boat ride to and from mainland Malay town.

“The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is actively monitoring sea and weather conditions, and may temporarily suspend operations from time to time as necessary due to sudden changes in visibility,” the Malay MTO said.
