Meralco: 'Kristine' disrupts power for nearly 400,000 customers

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) reported that it has restored power to thousands of consumers affected by severe tropical storm Kristine. 

As of noon Thursday, Oct. 24, Meralco said that 397,129 customers remain without electricity, but this number is steadily decreasing from 535,000 consumers.

Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, assured that the power utility firm is working around the clock to restore the residents’ electricity.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and our crews are working non-stop to restore service as soon as possible,” he said.

“We urge everyone to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions during this time.”

On Wednesday, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Task Force on Energy Resiliency (TFER) announced that 970,814 consumer connections were affected by power outages and interruptions.

To ensure safety, Meralco advised the public to turn off the power switch or circuit breakers when necessary and make sure that they are dry when dealing with any electrical facilities. Appliances must be plugged off from their wall sockets or turn off any connected equipment or light bulbs if possible.

When handling service equipment, ensure that mud and dirt have been removed and one should be working with rubber gloves or rubber-soled shoes.

Meralco also urged that people should only deal with electrical wires, connectors, and other wiring devices if they are dry. Otherwise, have it checked by a licensed electrician. Electrical appliances damaged by the flood should not be turned back on.
