‘Kristine’ displaces 900 families in Negros Occidental


BACOLOD CITY – Severe tropical storm “Kristine” has displaced 932 families or 3,395 individuals in this city and Negros Occidental province.

The Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council said 764 families or 2,811 individuals in 19 barangays in six municipalities were affected due to heavy rains.

Ten areas were flooded and the water later subsided on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Four landslides were reported and cleared. Two houses were partially damaged and another was totally damaged.

Kristine affected 72 farmers in three municipalities and P1-million worth of rice and corn were damaged.

Six fisherfolk in two barangays were affected and sustained P575,930 in damage.

One-hundred sixty-eight  families or 584 individuals were affected in 10 barangays here – 111 in Barangay Sum-ag, 10 in Barangay Pahanocoy, two in Barangay Cabug, four in Barangay Singcang-Airport, three in Barangay Taculing, one each in Barangays Estefania and Alijis, two in Barangay 1, 19 in Barangay Tangub, and 15 in Barangay Banago.

Edward Ramirez, chief of operations of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said that four families composed of 16 individuals were evacuated in Barangay Singcang-Airport on Wednesday due to possible flooding that may affect their houses.

Ramirez said that evacuees in Barangays Sum-ag and Pahanocoy have already returned to their houses.

No flooding was reported in this city, he added.

Meanwhile, Commander Jansen Benjamin, head of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-northern Negros Occidental, said that sea trips in Negros Occidental resumed on Thursday, Oct. 24, reducing the number of stranded passengers  to more than 100.

Benjamin said that Negros Occidental is no longer under a storm signal but trips are still suspended from Bacolod to Iloilo and vice-versa as Iloilo is still under storm signal No. 1.

He said that the PCG has not monitored any maritime incident related to Kristine as of Thursday noon.

Electrocuted

A 10-year-old boy died after he was  electrocuted in Sitio Calasag, Barangay Cansalogon, Isabela, Negros Occidental on Wednesday.

Police said the victim was taking care of ducks in a rice field around 7:30 a.m. when he accidentally touched an extension line with possible live wire connected to a fishpond.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
