DOLE prepares another job fair for displaced POGO workers

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is set to organize a second job fair in November to assist Filipino workers affected by the ban on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

DOLE Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma said the event is scheduled for the second or third week of November, aiming for a two-day weekend to encourage greater participation.

He noted that DOLE is coordinating with employers to allow workers to attend without facing penalties for their absence.

This job fair follows a similar event held in October, where 340 job seekers registered, resulting in 33 immediate hires.

Laguesma emphasized that the department is actively profiling displaced workers to assess their skills, job experience, and income, which helps tailor the support services being offered.

In addition to organizing job fairs, DOLE is expanding information dissemination efforts and collaborating with the Department of Migrant Workers to explore overseas employment opportunities for those affected.

While the venue for the upcoming job fair is still being finalized, it will be strategically located near POGO hubs to accommodate affected workers.

Beyond job fairs, the department is prioritizing livelihood assistance as well as upskilling and reskilling programs, particularly for those who previously held technical roles, such as encoders.

DOLE remains committed to supporting workers’ transition while preventing further unemployment following the July POGO ban due to illegal activities.

Recent estimates indicate that around 40,000 Filipino workers are affected by the POGO ban, with 70 percent already profiled.

Meanwhile, over 12,000 foreign POGO workers have applied to downgrade their visas to avoid deportation, in compliance with the Bureau of Immigration's October 15 deadline.
