In a market saturated with SUVs and crossovers, the Emkoo Hybrid distinguishes itself through its futuristic design, innovative technology, and hybrid efficiency. GAC's sleek SUV has been available for some time, but the introduction of the hybrid model has once again brought it into the spotlight. I had the opportunity to drive this promising hybrid variant for a week, allowing me to explore what the brand’s technology could offer potential customers.

At first glance, nothing seems to have changed. The Emkoo Hybrid retains its ultra-modern look, reminiscent of a sci-fi film prop. The exterior showcases sharp design elements, including the thin and angular headlamp units, which the brand markets as the "Eyes of Revelation." These headlamps create a striking visual impact and provide excellent illumination for both city and highway driving. The tail lights, known as Quantum Lightsaber taillights, feature a bold, angular design and emit a sharp red glow that cuts through darkness with impressive brightness. The design of the lighting units alone deserves applause.

The Emkoo Hybrid's dimensions convey a calm yet intimidating presence, with a long wheelbase that ensures a spacious cabin and ample cargo space. Aerodynamic features, such as flush electronic door handles and an aggressive rear wing, further enhance its design.

Under the hood, the Emkoo Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine producing 140-PS, combined with an electric motor capable of 182-PS. This results in a total power output of 237-PS and 300-Nm of torque, transmitted through a Dual Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that ensures a smooth and confident driving experience, particularly during transitions between electric and internal combustion power sources. The suspension system, featuring a front McPherson strut and a rear multi-link setup, balances comfort for daily commutes with stability for spirited driving.

The hybrid's front-wheel-drive system is paired with an electric power steering unit, resulting in light and precise steering, although it can feel overly light at times. While this may be beneficial for navigating tight urban streets, it lacks feedback on twisty roads, even with the additional weight provided by Sport mode.

Moving inside, the centerpiece of the dashboard is a 10.1-inch multifunctional floating touchscreen, offering intuitive control over the infotainment system and vehicle functions. For those seeking convenience, window and side mirror controls are also accessible through the touchscreen. Apple CarPlay is integrated, but sadly Android users are demoted to using CarBitLink, which is one of the clumsiest ways to integrate your Android phone with the car. Aside from the infotainment screen, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster provides the driver with essential data.

The Emkoo Hybrid is well-equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), aligning it with most competitors. Features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking for added safety. Lane-keeping assist and traffic jam assist conveniently facilitate driving in congested Manila. Notably, the blind spot detection system goes beyond the typical warning light on the side mirror by illuminating the interior ambient light red on the affected side, a clever feature that I appreciated during my time with the vehicle. For added convenience, the Emkoo Hybrid features a surround-view camera system, an electric tailgate, and rain-sensing wipers.

The interior, adorned with high-quality materials, offers leather-clad surfaces, power-adjustable front seats with three levels of ventilation for hot days, and a large center console that houses cupholders and numerous nooks, along with a DC plug and USB-A and C ports. The second row features a 40/60 split-folding rear seat that further expands the already spacious cargo area. Overall, the interior comfortably accommodates five passengers without compromising headroom or legroom. A sizeable glass roof with an electric sunshade lets in natural light, creating an open and inviting cabin atmosphere.

The hybrid system seamlessly blends electric and gasoline power, optimizing fuel consumption and reducing emissions. During my week with the Emkoo Hybrid, I achieved an impressive 19-km/L in ECO mode, primarily during urban driving. I began with a range of approximately 830-kilometers and ended with 588-kilometers by the time my test was done. In that time, the fuel gauge only moved down 1/8th of the way, even after spending my last day in Sport mode.

The Emkoo Hybrid presents itself as a forward-thinking crossover that excels in design, comfort, and efficiency. With its cutting-edge technology, impressive hybrid powertrain, and thoughtfully designed interior, it offers a well-rounded option for both tech enthusiasts and drivers seeking a greener alternative in the crossover market. Although many choices exist at its ₱1,698,000 price point, the Emkoo Hybrid stands out due to its futuristic design and driving efficiency, making it a compelling choice for those who value innovative design, advanced technology, and excellent fuel economy.
