315 passengers stranded in Negros Occidental seaports due to ‘Kristine’


BACOLOD CITY – A total of 315 passengers were stranded in three seaports in Negros Occidental on Wednesday, Oct. 23, after the province was placed under Signal No. 1 due to severe tropical storm Kristine.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-northern Negros Occidental reported as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday that there are 139 stranded passengers at Escalante port, 137 at the Bredco port here, and 39 at the Banago port in this city.

One-hundred thirty-six rolling cargoes were also stranded – 17 at the Banago port, 30 at the Bredco port, eight at the San Carlos port, and 81 at the Escalante port.

Commander Jansen Benjamin, head of PCG-northern Negros Occidental, said that all vessels regardless of the gross tonnage were advised not to sail due to the storm signal.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration placed the northern portion of Negros Occidental (Pontevedra, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Bago City, La Carlota City, Valladolid, Pulupandan, Bacolod City, San Enrique, Murcia, Silay City, City of Talisay, Enrique B. Magalona, Manapla, Victorias City, Cadiz City, Sagay City, Escalante City, Toboso, Calatrava, Don Salvador Benedicto, and San Carlos City) is under Signal No. 1.

The PCG advised seagoing riders, public coastal communities, and fisher folks to take precautionary measures while venturing out to sea and avoid navigation during inclement weather conditions if possible.
