It's Showtime's former Mini Miss U Ryrie Sophia makes her acting debut in 'Mujigae'

Currently showing in SM cinemas is the movie "Mujigae," which means "rainbow" in Korean. It is a heartwarming family drama about a five-year-old girl whose mother died, and the responsibility of taking care of her falls on the shoulders of her young aunt. What's good about "Mujigae" is the range of emotions it evokes -joy, tears, hope. Should it be on your list of movies to watch this week? We can tick off a few primary reasons why you should:

1) It's a movie about family. We've loved family movies lately, especially after watching "How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies." The touching story of "Mujigae" is very familiar to Filipinos who have witnessed the Great Diaspora, where Pinoys leave their families behind to work abroad. I can relate to the movie since I have KoPino (Korean-Filipino) nephews and nieces. The lesson is that you can always count on family, no matter what drama unfolds. They will always be around through the ups and downs, highs and lows of life.

2) Ryrie Sophia. The precocious child actress proved to be the star of the film as the orphan named "Mujigae." Ryrie held her own in the acting department and was even impressed with her ability to speak Korean. This girl is exceptionally talented, and we can't wait for her light to shine even further in the showbiz firmament in the coming years.

3) Kim Ji Soo. For his fans, seeing Kim portray the role of a father for the first time feeds their curiosity. This is not a major part for him, all right, but he plays the role with grace and perfection. The good news is that we'll see more of the Korean heartthrob as he has signed a contract with Sparkle and is now based in the Philippines (that's why he's in "Mujigae").

4) Alexa Ilacad. She proves once again that she is a multi-talented actress of her generation. In "Mujigae,"  she is Sunny, who is tormented to be the substitute mom for her niece after her sister passes away. Adding to the burden is her pending commitment to work abroad. Will she chase her dreams or fulfill familial duties instead? After the initial dislike, Sunny realizes that her bond with Mujigae is tighter than she had imagined. They develop a close connection. The scene where Mujigae leaves Sunny to be with her real father hits close to home. In real life, there are many people placed in these heartbreaking situations. Alexa's character shows that we don't have to be biological parents to be moms or dads; we can be "parents" in other ways because family circumstances call for it. The ending may not always be what we want, but life must go on.

"Mujigae" also stars Richard Quan, Anna Luna, Rufa Mae Quinto, Kate Alejandrino, Cai Cortez, Donna Cariaga and a few others.

The film is directed by Randolph Longjas and produced by Unitel x Straightshooters (UxS). Formerly known as Unitel Pictures, UxS is a seasoned production outfit known for making "Santa Santita," "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank," "Crying Ladies" and the forthcoming Metro Manila Film Festival entry, "Himala."
