The Republic of Peru and the Republic of the Philippines recently celebrated a significant milestone, the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, at Bonifacio Hall A, in Shangri-La at the Fort in Taguig City. Ambassador Cecilia Galarreta Bazán of Peru to the Philippines, addressing an audience of diplomats, officials, and business leaders, reflected on the enduring partnership between the two nations since 1974.
"Our countries have built a partnership based on mutual respect and shared values," Ambassador Galarreta emphasized, noting both countries' commitment to "the promotion of democracy and human rights, open markets, and a commitment to progress and prosperity." Despite the geographic distance, she highlighted the cultural and historical elements that unite the two nations.
One of the major achievements this year was the launch of the Political Consultation Mechanism. The ambassador noted that Peru’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Peter Camino, visited Manila to discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. These included accelerating market entry for new products, expanding scientific and educational exchanges, and enhancing cooperation on climate change and disaster risk management.
While there is no formal trade agreement between the two countries yet, Ambassador Galarreta expressed optimism, saying, "I am confident we will see fresh Peruvian products such as avocados, blueberries, and grapes here, and more Philippine goods in my country."
As Peru currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the ambassador praised the support of Filipino authorities and looked forward to deeper collaboration during the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in November. "We are focusing on empowering the most vulnerable economic actors in the Asia-Pacific region," she added, highlighting shared priorities between the two countries.
Ambassador Galarreta concluded by addressing the global challenges that necessitate continued partnership. "The challenges our world faces today…require more than ever that partners such as Peru and the Philippines continue to strengthen dialogue and cooperation," she stressed.
She extended heartfelt gratitude to both Filipinos and Peruvians for fostering the relationship between the two nations, offering special thanks to her team and local partners for making the event a success.
