Former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. said the government must provide additional assistance to workers in the creative industry as a way recognized their contributions to the Philippine's economy and cultural identity.

Abalos, who served as chairman of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) during the Covid-19 pandemic, said workers of the creative industry such as those in film, television, and radio are still reeling from the effects of the health crisis.

On Sunday, Oct. 13, Abalos graced the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair (BPSF)at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City where a total of P75 million worth of government assistance and services were provided to more than 15,000 workers in the creative industry.

In a speech, the former DILG chief lauded employees of the film, television, and radio industries for their dedication in their professions during the pandemic, despite the risk of infection.

“Doon natin nakita kung gaano kahalaga ang sektor na ito. Huwag kayong mag-alala, alam po namin ang plight ninyo,” said Abalos.

(That's when we realized how important this sector is. Don't worry, we understand your plight.)

Abalos, a senatorial candidate under the administration’s “Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas” slate, emphasized that “creativity is at the heart of our culture and economy”.

“As a senator, I will be a relentless advocate for our artists, musicians, and all those who contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our nation. They deserve support, recognition, and a platform to thrive,” he said in a statement.

If elected, Abalos said one of his priority measures was the establishment of a dedicated fund for creative projects.

He says that this is aimed at providing financial support for artists, filmmakers, musicians, and other creatives. This initiative, according to Abalos, is expected to facilitate greater access to resources, which will enable “innovative projects to flourish without financial burdens”.

Abalos said he will also push to advocate for the removal of the amusement tax for screenings of local films nationwide, within a certain period, to help revive the movie industry.

As a practicing lawyer, he emphasized that he will be committed to championing the rights of artists and creators by strengthening laws surrounding intellectual property. He added that this would protect their work and ensure that they receive fair compensation for their creativity.
