No proposal yet for Boracay bridge – Malay LGU

ILOILO CITY – No proposal has been submitted to local officials on the proposed bridge that will link world-famous Boracay Island to mainland Malay town in Aklan province.

The Sangguniang Bayan of Malay issued Resolution No. 184, Series of 2024, stating that it has not received any formal proposal or request for the bridge.

Residents have been clamoring for answers from local officials after it was reported last August that bridge construction would get funding next year.

The proposed bridge is listed under the P4.6-billion fund for public-private partnerships of the Department of Public Works and Highways budget.

The PPP Center listed on its website an unsolicited proposal from San Miguel Holdings Corp. to build a 1.2-kilometer bridge linking Boracay and mainland Malay.

According to PPP Center, the project aims to provide an all-weather, safe, and efficient access to and from Boracay Island while supporting the steady growth of the area.

But with no proposal to the local government unit (LGU) of Malay, the SB has not “approved or authorized the construction project involving a bridge and from Boracay Island.”

Travel to and from Boracay currently requires tourists and others to take a short boat ride.
