On Oct. 8, 2024, the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel was transformed into a hub of fashion and advocacy as diplomats, ambassadors, and their families took the stage for Diplomats for a Cause, a charity gala that combined elegance with a meaningful purpose. Hosted by the Spouses of Heads of Mission (SHOM) in collaboration with SM Retail's Kultura, SM Fashion, AXCS, and Fashion Forum, the event showcased not just the beauty of Philippine culture, but also a commitment to uplifting marginalized communities in the country.
As the runway came alive with foreign dignitaries adorned in locally-made apparel and accessories, the event focused on promoting Filipino artistry through fashion and MSME-driven retail. Kultura, known for its dedication to promoting homegrown products, highlighted how artisans and MSMEs play a crucial role in the nation's cultural and economic identity.
For many in the diplomatic community, it was a refreshing change from their formal duties. With smiles and laughter, they embraced their roles as models for the night, showcasing Filipino craftsmanship with pride. It was a wonderful sight to see these dignitaries in a playful and casual manner, while demonstrating their support for the cause as happy-givers. The ballroom echoed with laughter as the diplomats exchanged playful banter on stage. They lightened up the mood of the evening as they danced with the music, strutted the ramp, blew kisses to the cheering crowd, flashed thumbs-up signs, and did poses that amused everyone. Consul of Monaco RJ Ledesma, the program host, put into words the mood of the event, “If there’s anything that resembles world peace, this fashion show comes very, very close to that.”
The primary goal of the evening, however, extended far beyond fashion. The gala was aimed at raising awareness and funds for vulnerable communities across the Philippines, including women, children, and persons with disabilities. SHOM’s continuous advocacy for grassroots welfare found a perfect partner in the SM Group, which has long advocated for Filipino communities. The event celebrated unity and shared values, with the diplomatic community stepping up in full force.
As part of the gala, a silent auction of Filipino artworks added another layer to the evening’s charitable efforts. Attendees were invited to bid on pieces created by talented Filipino artists, further promoting local talent while contributing to the cause. The auction, much like the fashion show, emphasized the evening’s goal: to uplift and support local communities while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
The event turned into an unexpected moment of unity and friendship. In between the poses, grins, and gestures, it was clear that this was no ordinary fundraising event—it was a night where formality took a backseat, and everyone joined together in a spirit of goodwill.
“Not everybody wanted to be a model, especially the ambassadors, but they willingly helped because the cause is for the betterment of the poor Filipinos, vulnerable women, children, and people with disabilities. The Filipino people are very generous, warm, and lovely. We enjoyed all our time here, so this is our way to give back,” said Mme. Indri Puspitasari Akyol, chairperson of the project and spouse of Turkiye Ambassador Niyazi Evren Akyol.
