Student drowns as motorcycle crashes in Kalinga


TABUK CITY, Kalinga – An 18-year-old student drowned and her back rider was rescued after their motorcycle plunged in an irrigation canal in Barangay Bulanao, this city, on Thursday night, October 10.

Police Master Sgt. Prodencio Atas, Tabuk police spokesperson, identified the fatality as Precious Kate D. Arcio, 18, of Barangay Nambaran, Tabuk City.

Investigation said Arcio and her companion, Jaslyn B. Tandingan, 19, also a student, of Barangay Bulanao, were on their way to a business establishment when the fatality lost control of their motorcycle and crashed into an irrigation canal.

Tandingan was rescued by bystanders but Arcio was carried away by the strong current and drowned in the canal. 

Arcio’s body was recovered by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office a few hours later.

Tandingan admitted that they were drunk when they figured in the accident.

Meanwhile, a freshman electrical engineering student of the Isabela State University-Ilagan Campus and a resident of Barangay San Fermin, Cauayan City, Isabela, collapsed and died during a school fun run on Thursday, October 10.

Engr. Alfonso “Cholo” Simon, ISU-Ilagan executive officer, identified the victim as Timothy John Idago of Barangay San Fermin.

Simon said Idago received immediate first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation but died despite their efforts.
