DTI promotes bamboo bike tours at Intramuros

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)'s Go Lokal! Program operator Manila Canvas launched the Bambike Night Tours program as a way for local and foreign visitors to explore the evening wonders of the historical town of Intramuros.

Manila Canvas has partnered with the Intramuros Administration and Go Lokal! micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) Bambike Revolution Cycles for the program.

The five-kilometer bike tour will begin from Fort Santiago, traversing Memorare De Manila 1845, San Agustin Church, Casa Manila, Puerta del Parian, Plaza Roma/Manila Cathedral, Plaza Moriones, ending back at Fort Santiago.

DTI in a statement that the cost of the tour is around P1,799 per person, with additional fees for extra accommodations.

The tour includes the bike, ponchos, and vouchers worth P100 to buy merchandise or food and beverage at Manila Canvas' store.

Aside from being a unique way to see Intramuros' sights, the group said the bike night tour was also conducted to promote sustainable tourism by encouraging visitors to use alternative modes of transport like bicycles when traversing through Intramuros' cobbled streets.

Recently, more bike lanes and pedestrian lanes guarded by bollards have been installed along the pathways to reduce vehicular traffic inside the walled city, and make way for kalesas and tri-bikes to freely roam the area.

Visitors who are interested in participating in the program can book the two-hour Bambike Night Tour by registering online (through http://bit.ly/Bambiketours).

For families with children ages one to five years-old, and other individuals who need mobility support, special night tours can also be availed from Manila Canvas.

A tour on a Bambike bamboo side car for one person with a trained operator can be purchased for P1,000. A Bambike with a child seat can also be requested.

For an exclusive bike tour, an additional cost of P3,000 must be paid for the whole group.

Tours can be availed everyday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
