TACLOBAN CITY – The province of Northern Samar aims to become the wind energy capital of the Philippines with the implementation of a P108-billion wind energy project by an offshore company.

Gov. Edwin Ongchuan met executives of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) on Thursday, January 25, to discuss the 650-megawatt (MW) North Samar Offshore Wind Power Project.
CIP has informed the provincial government about its plan to establish a large-scale offshore wind project in the municipalities of Bobon, Catarman, Mondragon, San Roque, Pambujan, and Laoang.
It is the first foreign investor to be granted site exclusivity in the Philippines following the authorization of foreign ownership in renewable energy projects in November 2022.
It also became the first fully foreign owned company to be awarded renewable energy service contracts in the Philippines on March 30, 2023.
The project is currently in the pre-development phase and is expected to begin ground investigation in the first quarter of 2024 that will continue until the end of 2025.
Discussions have likewise begun with the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines to secure the best options in ensuring grid connection.
It includes potential grid connection points such as the Calbayog 138-kilovolt (kV) substation, San Isidro 138 kV substation, a potential new station near a 350 kV transmission line, and the Calbayog-Allen 138 kV transmission project.
