PNP cybercops nabbed man for extortion attempt from OFW

Thirty-year old Vicente Nuñez thought he hit the jackpot on Monday, Jan, 22, when he finally forced a female overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to meet him in Quezon City for his personal need which he has been fantasizing for four months now.

Little did he know that he was already dealing with an operative of the Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG).

As a result, Nuñez got the biggest surprise of his life when it was the cops who appeared at his designated meeting place, and ended with him being hauled off to jail.

Police Lt. Col. Jay Guillermo, chief of the PNP-ACG Cyber Response Unit, said the victim was forced to go home from Saudi Arabia after Nuñez repeatedly threatened that he would leak her sensitive photos if she would continuously decline his demand.

Investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect met via a social media platform in September last year and began their short long distance relationship that ended a month later.

But the suspect would not easily give up as he started threatening the victim.

The victim went straight to the police to seek assistance. PNP-ACG operatives then mapped out an entrapment which resulted in the arrest of the suspect in Cubao, Quezon City at noon on Monday.

Seized from the suspect was an android phone and an identification card which proved that he is the same person who is the subject of the complaint of the victim.

Guillermo said appropriate criminal charges are now being readied against the suspect.

The PNP-ACG has been warning the public to be careful in dealing with people they would meet on social media, noting the prevalence of online scams and cybercriminals.

The PNP-ACG also advised the public to immediately seek police assistance if they are being victimized by cybercriminals.
