For this year’s celebration of the International Day of Education (IDE), the Department of Education (DepEd) will highlight the urgent need to improve the engagement of Filipino youth in education.
Observed annually on Jan. 24, the IDE aims to underscore the important role of education in peace and development.
In a Facebook post, DepEd announced that its External Partnerships Service-International Cooperation Office (EPS-ICO) will spearhead the celebration of IDE 2024 through a forum.
With the theme “Education in the Transformative Times: Making Early Grade Learning Contribute to Lasting Peace,” DepEd said the “IDE 2024 Forum is a call for action to bring individuals, civil society, and policymakers to take solid steps towards ensuring that primary and secondary education is given to children, as well as improving youth engagement in education.”
The celebration of IDE 2024 will be livestreamed on the official Facebook page, YouTube channel, and website of DepEd Philippines.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed Jan. 24 as IDE according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The sixth IDE this year, UNESCO said, will be celebrated under the theme “learning for lasting peace.”
UNESCO said it is dedicating this year’s IDE to the “crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon which has snowballed in recent years with the use of social media, damaging the fabric of our societies.”
