DOH warns public of health risks from 'vog'

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, Aug. 19, urged the public to take precautions due to high levels of sulfur dioxide emissions from Taal Volcano, which are causing volcanic smog, or "vog."

The DOH issued a health advisory warning the public, especially residents near Taal Volcano, about the health risks of vog.

“Ang usok o vog ay masama sa kalusugan at maaaring magdulot ng iritasyon sa mga mata, lalamunan, at respiratory tract, na maaaring maging malubha depende sa konsentrasyon o tagal ng pagkalanghap (The smoke or vog is harmful to health and can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract, which can become severe depending on the concentration or duration of exposure),” the DOH said.

As a precaution, the DOH urged individuals to avoid outdoor activities to limit exposure to vog, keep windows and doors closed to prevent smog from entering, cover the mouth and nose with N95 masks if available, and stay hydrated.

The DOH also advised affected individuals to be prepared and stay informed with the latest updates on the volcano's condition.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has been monitoring continuous degassing activity at Taal Volcano, which has resulted in hazy conditions in nearby communities due to volcanic smog.
