Robbery suspect injured after resisting arrest

A man was hurt when he resisted arrest following his attempt to rob a jeepney driver in Sta. Mesa, Manila on Friday, Jan. 12.

The Manila Police District (MPD) identified the arrested suspect as Felix Babon, 27, a resident of San Jose, Antipolo City.

According to the police report, the jeepney driver was driving his vehicle from Jose P. Laurel Street to Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard in Sta. Mesa around 4:40 p.m. when the suspect suddenly boarded his jeepney.

The suspect sat behind the driver's seat and pointed a knife at the driver's nape, then declared a hold-up and told him to just drive straight.

Out of fear, the driver jumped out of his vehicle when they reached the Plaza Avelino Police Community Precinct (PCP) and immediately asked for assistance from the police officers who were in front of the PCP.

The police immediately responded and asked the suspect to surrender himself with his knife. However, he refused to cooperate, prompting the authorities to disarm him using their shield and baton.

During the confrontation, the suspect jumped off the jeepney and attacked one police officer using his knife.

The policeman shot the suspect in the leg to prevent him from attacking other officers and to secure the safety of other people around the area.

The suspect was brought to Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center for medical attention.

At around 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, the suspect was discharged from the hospital and brought to Sta. Mesa Police Station for investigation.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that the suspect has a previous robbery snatching case in Antipolo City.

The suspect will face two counts of robbery, illegal possession of a bladed weapon, and direct assault.
