Baguio acute gastroenteritis cases top 2,700


BAGUIO CITY – The City Health Services Office reported 2,764 acute gastroenteritis here as of January 12.

This was 500 more than Thursday, January 11.

The Food and Water-Related Illness Self-Reporting Dashboard of the City Health Services Office said 38.1 percent were men and 61.9 percent were women, with 34.9 percent still with symptoms and 65.1 percent have recovered.

Cases were recorded from December 2 to January 10 and 609 consulted the hospital. A sudden increase in cases was recorded from January 2 to January 8.

Age of victims ranged from zero to 60 and above with the most affected aged 20 to 34.

Two-hundred ninety-four were from outside Baguio, 204 from BLISTT (Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay), and the rest from the 128 barangays here.

Source was food establishments (62.4 percent), take-out food (12.3 percent), home-cooked food (13.3 percent), and others (12.1 percent).

Mayor Benjamin Magalong warned businessmen here against selling high-priced bottled water during the outbreak.

Magalong said the outbreak will end soon and they are awaiting the  results of the water samples collected from identified establishments, deep well, and households.
