42 men betting on spider combat apprehended in Cebu City


CEBU CITY – Police arrested a group of men betting on spider combat on Monday night, September 23, in Barangay Lorega San Miguel here.

Police Major Marvin Fegarido, chief of the Parian Police Station, said the illegal gambling activity was reported by a concerned citizen through the 911 national hotline after noise created by the bettors.

A total of 42 persons were arrested.

“It was like a fiesta. When the spiders start to fight, those who placed bets will start shouting,” said Fegarido.

Seized during the operation were improvised small boxes containing 32 live spiders.

The bettors created an improvised spider fighting arena that was also seized by the police.

Bet money worth P2,470 was confiscated.

Charges for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 that imposes stiffer penalities against illegal gambling will be filed against the arrested persons.
