Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan and Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto led the city's participation in the 39th International Coastal Cleanup along the coast of Baseco on Saturday, September 21, along with several volunteer organizations.

The volunteers were assigned to six stations in Baseco to make the cleaning of the coast systematic and prudent, according to the departments of city hall.

"This Coastal Cleanup is important to reduce the debris and waste carried by the flood current from the land and the wave and tide of the sea," said Mayor Lacuna-Pangan.

The mayor also said that the city has been continuously conducting coastal cleanup as the debris and garbage accumulated in Manila Bay have increased.

"The floodwaters of Metro Manila and neighboring towns surrounding Manila Bay flow through Manila Bay. Since the floods were severe from July to September, we are not surprised that we got a lot of debris and garbage," she noted.

"We will convey to those in charge of the national government the Manila report after this coastal cleanup. I hope they will learn lessons to reduce the severity of the damage caused by floods in the future. Flooding in Metro Manila is complex and because of that different types of solutions are needed," mayor added.
