Chynna Mamawal makes her New York Fashion Week debut

The Filipina fashion designer presents her opulent and whimsical creations in the Big Apple

Chynna Mamawal is living her dream. She has dressed many A-list stars, mastered the retail industry, and presented a collection at Vancouver Fashion Week in 2023. Now, she’s checking off another item on her bucket list—showcasing a collection in one of the world's major fashion capitals.

On Sept. 8, the Filipina fashion designer conquered the Big Apple as she unveiled her spring-summer collection during New York Fashion Week (NYFW). Her latest line, revealed at Annex 417, 38th St., 5th Ave., reflects her growth as a designer, featuring new silhouettes, diverse textures, and a more romantic color palette.

“This collection shows my maturity as a fashion designer. Now, I have more experience on the global stage. It is the elevated version of Chynna Mamawal,” she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “Ever since I was young, it’s been my dream to become an international designer.”

Chynna is known for creating opulent pieces fit for the red carpet and formal occasions. For NYFW, she pushed her design boundaries, embracing the creative energy of the city. While the designs are crafted for a global audience, the designer proudly notes that every piece is made in the Philippines by her Filipino team.

“I wanted to go all out creatively, so I focused on making each piece a true work of art,” she says. “I’ve been in the industry for six years now, and with more experience, I felt it was time to take some risks and try something different.”

The collection features both women’s and men’s pieces, reimagining modern elegance. The show begins with peach ensembles, featuring luxe drapery for men and a variety of embellishments for women, including linear beading, feathered elements, and 3D florals. Pieces in beige showcase her design restraint, emphasizing unique silhouettes. Texture and movement come alive in her lilac pieces, adorned with frills, fringes, and pearl accents. The show concludes with a dramatic red finale. Among the highlights include a suit ensemble with 3D rose appliqués and a strapless tulle ballgown with sculptural floral detail, worn by Miss Universe 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel.

“My artistic style has definitely evolved, especially while working on this collection,” Chynna reflects. “I’ve learned so much throughout the process, from experimenting with new techniques to using fabrics I don’t typically work with. This experience has significantly enhanced my skills, and I now feel more experienced and confident in my craft.”

Showcasing at NYFW is not just the fulfillment of a childhood dream. For Chynna, this milestone proves that Filipino fashion is global. She believes that if she can make it to this prestigious event, other Filipino talents can also rise to prominence and make their mark on the world stage.

“My journey is proof that dreams are attainable with hard work and dedication,” Chynna says. “If I can achieve my goals, so can other Filipino designers. I hope my success inspires the international community to recognize the immense talent from the Philippines and give our designers the recognition they deserve.”
