President Marcos has assured the public that the resolution of the case of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo will not be prolonged as he stressed that evading the long arm of the law is futile.
Marcos said this following the arrest of Guo, also known as Guo Hua Ping, at about 1 a.m. in Tangerang City in Jakarta, Indonesia on Sept. 4.
In a video message, the President said that Guo would be entitled to her legal rights but assured the public that the case would be resolved quickly.
"Miss Guo shall be entitled to all legal protections due her under the laws of the land, and pursuant to our commitment to the rule of law," he said.
"But we will not allow this to prolong the resolution of the case, whose outcome will be a victory for the Filipino people," he added.
Marcos said Guo's arrest should serve as a reminder that it was no use escaping justice.
"Let this serve as a warning to those who attempt to evade justice: Such is an exercise in futility. The arm of the law is long and it will reach you," he said.
"This government continues in its duty to apply the rule of law," he added.
In a separate interview with reporters in Quezon City, Marcos said they are already finalizing the arrangements for Guo's return to the Philippines within the day.
In his video message, the President lauded the Filipino and Indonesian authorities who worked tirelessly to arrest Guo, who was reported to have fled the country as early as July 17.
"I congratulate all law enforcement personnel who made this apprehension possible. The public may not know the intricate details of this mission that you have successfully accomplished, but on their behalf, accept my thanks," he said.
"The Philippines also thanks the Indonesian Government for their assistance on this matter. The close cooperation between our two governments has made this arrest possible," he added.
Meanwhile, the President told reporters in Quezon City that the government will fire and charge the Immigration officials who had a hand in Guo's escape in July.
"All of those who are implicated in assisting Alice Guo to leave the Philippines illegally as a fugitive from justice will certainly pay the price," he said.
"Hindi lang namin sila sisibakin, kakasuhan pa namin sila dahil ang kanilang ginawa ay labag sa batas at (We will not only fire them but also charge them because what they did was against the law and was) against all of the interests of the Philippine judicial system," he added.
Last week, President Marcos said the government has already identified employees of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) behind Guo's escape. He earlier vowed that "heads will roll" after Guo managed to flee last month.
The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) earlier said that the last sighting of Alice Guo in the Philippines was on July 14 in a private resort in the western tip of Luzon.
