Racing in his third consecutive Olympic stint, Mangliwan clocked in 1 minute and 5.79 seconds to barge to the medal round.

Belgian Maxime Carabin topped the heats with a time of 54.48sec – which marked his personal-best – while Swiss Fabian Blu (1:04.08), Mexican Mondragon Hernandez (1:05:71), Japanese Tatsuya Ito (1:09:55) clinched second, third and fifth, respectively.

Finals is set Saturday, Aug. 31, at the same venue.
