How Bontoc's beauty builds cultural tourism

PHILTRA hosts SEA Trail Running Cup 2024

Nature reciprocates conservation efforts with both beauty and function. In the Bontoc region, these efforts are rewarded with a stunning trail that serves as a sports venue and a place to appreciate the environment.

The Philippine Trail Running Association (PHILTRA) hosted the Southeast Asian Trail Running Cup 2024 from June 20 to 23 in Bontoc, Mountain Province, drawing about 100 elite trail runners from the SEA region.

The biennial event showcased the lush landscapes and rugged terrains of Mountain Province, highlighting its potential as a hub for international trail running events and cultural tourism.

"This event not only showcased the Philippines’ natural beauty but also demonstrated our commitment to organizing world-class sporting events. The Philippines has so much to offer the world of trail running, and we're excited to share it on a global stage," said Tin Ferrera, VP and secretary-general of PHILTRA.

The lineup of races includes Long Trail (76.8 km), Short Trail (36.8 km), Mountain Classic (12 km), and Vertical Uphill for endurance and adaptability tests. Tawid Mountain Marathon, an open category recognizing top runners, was also held alongside the SEA Trail marathon.

Each route tested the runners' endurance and allowed them to enjoy the scenery of Bontoc, starting with the crossing of the Chico River bridge followed by a run through the rice fields of Samoki Village. The course also featured the iconic 1000 steps that led participants to the ancient Ganga Burial Caves and Petroglyph.

“We hope all racers were able to enjoy the trails and appreciate the beauty of the mountains of Bontoc,” said Roland Wangwang, Tawid Mountain Marathon race organizer. “As we welcomed all delegates from different parts of Southeast Asia, we hope that guests and participants will be able to promote Bontoc to your respective countries as well."

Team Philippines secured championship titles in the Short Trail Men and Women and Long Trail Men categories, followed by Team Thailand.

The Mountain Province of Bontoc demonstrates how conservation efforts can transform landscapes into hubs for cultural tourism, helping prove that integrating nature and the environment into our daily activities is possible — even in sports.
