DepEd to hold a three-week National Learning Camp this year

In a Facebook post on Saturday, June 15, DepEd announced that the NLC for this year will be held next month as part of its continued learning recovery efforts.

“Ito ay boluntaryo at libre para sa mga mag-aaral ng pampublikong paaralan (This is voluntary and free for public school students),” DepEd said.

This year’s NLC is scheduled from July 1 to 19.

Focused on Grades 1 to 3 and Grades 7 to 10, DepEd explained that the NLC is a learning recovery program “aimed at improving student performance and enhancing teacher capacity.”

The NLC is in support of the MATATAG Basic Education Agenda and is a sub-program under the National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP) aimed at addressing learning loss.

The NLC was first rolled out during the 2022-2023 End-of-School Year (EOSY) break.

With a two-fold purpose of improving learning outcomes and supporting teachers to teach better, the NLC was designed to run for three to five weeks.

However, adjustments were made for this year’s NLC due to the extreme heat experienced starting in the months of March and April.

Based on DepEd Order No. 003, series of 2024, the NLC shall continue to be implemented this year.

However, due to the adjustment of the school calendar for SY 2023-2024, activities in the consolidation and intervention camps shall be conducted within “three weeks instead of the five weeks” during the SY 2023-2024 EOSY break.

In implementing the NLC, DepEd recognizes that “learners need to be supported to address the learning loss.”

Moreover, DepEd said that through the conduct of the NLC, it remains committed to supporting teachers and “taking cognizance of unequivocal evidence that good teachers are vital to raising learner achievement.”

DepEd said that the duration of the NLC and other EOSY break programs depends on the situation on the ground.

“Schools have the flexibility to design the class program, provided that the suggested teaching and learning materials are adequately covered and the targeted learning competencies are not compromised,” DepEd said.

Meanwhile, DepEd stressed that the services of teachers in the NLC shall be “voluntary.”

Based on the specific needs of the learners, they shall be enrolled in one of three camps: Enhancement Camp, Consolidation Camp, or Intervention Camp.

The NLC, DepEd said, aims to create a camp-like atmosphere by integrating fun and engaging activities to foster learner interests, socio-emotional skills, personal growth, and character development.
