In its latest weather report, PAGASA Weather Specialist Daniel Villamil said that the tropical storm's international name is "Maliksi."

"Sa kasalukuyan, patuloy nating minomonitor itong bagyo sa labas ng ating Philippine Area of Responsibility. Isa itong tropical storm na may international name na 'Maliksi' (Currently, we continue to monitor this storm outside our Philippine Area of Responsibility. It is a tropical storm with the international name 'Maliksi')," Villamil.

He noted that as of 3 a.m., the center of the tropical storm was monitored 1,060 kilometers (km) west of the extreme northern Luzon.

It has maximum sustained winds near the center of up to 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 90 kph.

"So, we expect that in the coming hours, the storm will continue to move generally northeastward, then eastward," Villamil said in a mix of English and FIlipino.

"Within these hours, we expect that due to the storm's interaction with the land of mainland China, it is possible that it will weaken into a tropical depression or become a low-pressure area before exiting the Taiwan Strait," he added.

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau is not ruling out the possibility of the storm entering the PAR as a low-pressure area or tropical depression.

According to PAGASA's latest analysis, this tropical storm will have no direct effect on the country in the next few days.

"It is also less likely that this storm will enhance or pull in our southwest monsoon or "hanging habagat," Villamil said.

Weather forecast

"Currently, the easterlies, or the winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, remain the dominant weather system affecting our country," Villamil said.

"At present, they are affecting the eastern sections of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao," he added.

Thus, PAGASA noted that Metro Manila and most parts of the country will continue to experience hot and humid weather.

"We also expect chances of sudden and brief heavy rains caused by localized thunderstorms," the weather specialist said.
