Filipino students won in the Global English Language Olympiad of Southeast Asia (GELOSEA) 2024 International Round held in Da Nang, Vietnam.
The GELOSEA “is an international competition in English for Kindergarten, six Primary Levels (Grades 1 to 6), four Secondary Levels (Secondary 1 to 4) and one Senior Secondary Level (Grade 11 & 12),” according to the website of organizer Global League of Winners Inc. (GLOW).

“It aims to promote excellence and proficiency in the use of English language through friendly global competitions and to promote Southeast Asia’s tourism, with Philippines as the first destination, then Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and other SEA countries to other country partners worldwide,” it added.
For Kindergarten and Primary Levels (Grades 1 to 6), the competition covered reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling, analogy and grammar and correct usage.
In the secondary levels, the topics covered were reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling, analogy, grammar and correct usage, and essay writing.
One of the winners is Erwin John Fruelda, a Grade 10 student of De La Salle Santiago Zobel Br. Rafael Donato FSC Night High School in Muntinlupa. He won a gold award in the Secondary 4 level.
“He really did a good job representing De La Salle Zobel, Muntinlupa City, and of course, the Philippines,” said Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon of Fruelda, who visited him at his office at the Muntinlupa City hall.
Fruelda will also be the batch valedictorian, the mayor said.
