Dennis Mapa secures second term as PSA chief


President Marcos has reappointed Claire Dennis S. Mapa as the national statistician and civil registrar general of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

On Saturday, June 1, National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan administered the oath of office to Mapa, marking the beginning of his second term in office as the country’s top statistician and civil registrar general.

 

 

Before assuming his position in 2019, Mapa, who will serve a fresh five-year term, was the dean and professor of statistics at the School of Statistics, University of the Philippines (UP). 

Throughout his career, Mapa held key roles in various organizations and projects, including the UP Statistical Center Research Foundation, Inc., the Governing Board of the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute, the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., and the Gas Policy Development Project.

Known for his expertise, Mapa is a highly decorated researcher focusing on areas such as poverty analysis, household savings, fertility, population dynamics, market risk measurement, and forecasting methods for volatility. 

In addition to his research contributions, Mapa has authored chapters in nationally and internationally published books and monographs on population studies, poverty and hunger, youth unemployment, and energy.

Mapa holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics, two Master’s degrees—one in Economics and one in Statistics—and a Doctorate in Economics, all earned from UP Diliman.
