Vietnam stays undefeated; Kazakhstan advances to semis in AVC Cup

Defending champion Vietnam and Kazakhstan dismantled their rivals to clinch semifinal tickets in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, May 26.

The Vietnamese bucked a third-set hiccup and edged Southeast Asian rival Indonesia, 25-17, 25-15, 25-27, 25-13, while the Kazakhs hammered out a 25-17, 25-18, 25-4 thrashing of Hong Kong.

Vi Thi Nhu Quynh exploded for 26 points including 23 attacks for Vietnam, which finished the group stage with an immaculate 4-0 record to top Pool B.

Tu Linh Tranh provided reinforcements with 11 points, while Nguyen Thi Tra My and Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen chipped in 10 points apiece for the Vietnamese.

Kazakhstan, for its part, drew strength from skipper Sana Anarkulova, who fired 22 points built on 19 attacks, two blocks and one ace, as well as Zhanna Syroyeshkina, who added 16 points highlighted by five aces.

The Kazakhs finished Pool B with a 3-1 card, and are waiting for the final standings in Pool A to determine their semis opponent.

Vietnam will face the No. 2 team in Pool A, while Kazakhstan will meet the No. 1 squad.

Alas Pilipinas is set to battle winless Chinese Taipei later in the day in its bid to keep its record intact for the No. 1 seeding in Pool A.
