Schools continue to suspend face-to-face classes as SY 2023-2024 nears its end

Intense heat forces 7,734 schools to shift to alternative delivery modes


As the current school year almost draws to a close, face-to-face classes in more than 7,000 schools remained suspended on Thursday, May 2, due to the extreme heat experienced nationwide.

Data from the Department of Education (DepEd) showed that 7,734 out of 47,678 schools nationwide are implementing ADMs to ensure learning continuity amid the suspension of face-to-face classes due to hot weather.

Based on the data gathered by DepEd from its regional offices, Region 6 has the most schools implementing ADMs with 1,613. It was followed by Region 3 with 1,254 and Region 5 with 1,181 schools.

Here’s the breakdown of regions with suspended face-to-face classes: Region 1 with 319; Region 2 with 414; Region 4A with 268; Region 4B with 462; Region 7 with 407; Region 8 with 136; Region 9 with 666; Region 10 with 108; Region 11 with 28; Region 12 with 366; Region 13 with one; CAR with 259; and Metro Manila with 252.

End of SY 2023-2024

In line with its efforts to gradually shift back to an April to May break, DepEd adjusted the activities for SY 2023-2024.

Based on DepEd Order No. 03 series of 2024 released in February, the End-of-SY (EOSY) 2023-2024 was moved to May 31, 2024.

The adjusted school calendar showed that the Fourth Quarter Exam should be conducted from May 16 to 17.

Schools were likewise encouraged to conduct their respective EOSY Rites from May 29 to 31.

Due to the adjustments, DepEd also moved the EOSY Break schedule from June 1 to July 26, 2024.

As announced by DepEd, the official start of the School Year 2024-2025 will be on July 29 and will end on May 16, 2025.
