The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said on Monday, April 29, that the "deepfake" audio of President Marcos was the work of an individual, not a country.
"I can tell you right now, if there's really a good development on who, kung sino talaga 'yun (I can tell you right now, if there's really a good development on who, who it really is)," CICC Deputy Executive Director Assistant Secretary Mary Rose Magsaysay said in an interview in PTV's "Bagong Pilipinas" segment.
"So obviously, it's a person, and not an AI (artificial intelligence). So, you don't run after a whole country," she added in a mix of English and Filipino.
"You really have to find out who the person behind that, what platform they used," Magsaysay explained.
The official then emphasized the body's dedication toward solving the recent 'deepfake' incident.
"So even through the weekend, we were heavily investigating it," she said.
"And nice to be able to tell the people that as [the] government, we are lead, And at the end of the day, we are the ones they turn to," she added.
Not related to ‘Balikatan’
Meanwhile, the CICC believed that the recent deepfake incident against the president has nothing to do with the "Balikatan" exercise or the annual bilateral military exercise between the Philippines and the United States (US).
"Because when it comes to that, it's an exercise we've been doing for so many years, right? And for the creation of this one, it just so happened that they were here, but it's not because of the Balikatan," she explained.
On April 25, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy pointed out that they are expecting more deepfake incidents as the election approaches.
"Well, dadami 'yan at lalago, lalo na po ngayon with AI (artificial intelligence) and parating po 'yung mga elections this year (Well, it's going to grow, especially now with AI, and especially with the upcoming elections this year)," DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said on the sideline of the Girls in ICT Day 2024.
