760,000 devotees join Black Nazarene's procession on Good Friday


After a break of several years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Quiapo Church officials said that over 760,000 devotees again joined the traditional Holy Week procession of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila on Good Friday, March 29.

At least 122 devotees were reportedly given assistance for various medical conditions.  

 

Quiapo Church officials said that the crowd estimate included those who joined the procession from all 12 segments of the procession route and devotees who gathered at the church. 

 

The procession was a religious activity that was conducted to commemorate Jesus Christ's crucifixion. 

 

In April 2023, the procession of the image of the Black Nazarene for Holy Week was conducted through a motorcade due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manila Police District (MPD)-Sta. Cruz Police Station (PS-14) said that the procession started from Quiapo Church at around 11 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, March 28. 

 

The procession proceeded to Villalobos Street, right to Carlos Palanca Street, right to Plaza Lacson, right to Carriedo Street, then left to the northbound of Rizal Avenue, right to Recto Avenue, right to Legarda Street, right to San Rafael Street, left to Bilibid Viejo Street, left to Gonzalo Puyat Street, and left to Z.P. De Guzman Street, right to Hidalgo Street, left to the northbound of Quezon Boulevard, right to Carlos Palanca Street, and back to Villalobos Street, and ended at Plaza Miranda at around 10:22 a.m. on Friday.  

 

Church officials said the procession lasted for 10 hours and 48 minutes. 

 

The MPD said it deployed over 2,400 personnel to maintain security in the area and during the procession.
