The Malabon City government, in partnership with the Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA) and the Nagkaisang Samahan ng mga Senior Citizens cooperative, distributed 19 sacks of rice to 37 senior citizens in the city on Thursday, February 22.
Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval led the distribution held at the Malabon Amphitheater.
The initiative is part of the livelihood assistance program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC).
The distribution was in line with Sandoval’s goal that aims at uplifting the lives of all residents especially the elderly.
The 37 elderly recipients were leaders of the Federation of Malabon Senior Citizen Association (FEMASCA) from the city's 21 barangays.
The beneficiaries have the option to sell the rice packages for additional income.
OSCA stated that the city government offered various programs for senior citizens, such as cash assistance, local social pension, feeding program, and emergency employment.
It added that the elderly can choose their preferred livelihood such as the rice, carinderia, and tailoring packages.
The mayor vowed to enhance the quality of life for Malabueños through improved and accessible programs for all the residents.
The schedule for the turnover of the remaining packages will soon be announced.
The NCSC and DOLE have also distributed 2,300 sacks of rice to 144 senior citizens from the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela (Camanava).
