Padul-ong Festival in Borongan City attracts tourists

TACLOBAN CITY – The Padul-ong Festival in Borongan City, Eastern Samar, which celebrates the nativity of patron saint the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8, attracted tourists from various parts of the world.

Highlight of the event was a dance competition and the parade of flotillas with the image of the Blessed Mother around the city proper.

John Key, 58, from Texas, United States, expressed joy and appreciation for the warm welcome accorded to tourists like him by residents.

"We do not have (festivals like this), our culture is more of a western, (such as) rodeo. Bull riding, state fair. Nothing like a big parade. (And the celebration here) is much more colorful and musical. Everybody (is) enjoying to celebrate the Virgin Mary," Key said.

Tracy, 59, also from Texas, said he Padul-ong Festival is fun and mesmerizing as she witnessed the contestants’ exceptional performances and how the people are devoted to Mary.

"It's actually our first time to witness this event, and I find it fun because aside from the performances, I've noticed how this festival means to the locals. They really are devoted to Saint Mary, as what I've seen. The crowds almost occupy each side of the venue," Tracy added.

Triby Rayhak of the Santa Fe National High School bagged first place in the dance competition and P300,000.

Maypangdan National High School's Tribu Sagitik won second place and P250,000. Third was Eastern Samar National Comprehensive High School's Tribu Magkasikasi which pocketed P200,000.
