“My inspiration behind the exhibit is a blend of personal memories, particularly those associated with Dorog’s mountainous landscapes, and the revolutionary artistic movement of fauvism,” he reveals.

In the vibrant exhibit, red, orange, and yellow are not just colors but symbols of life and emotion. The colors represent emotions associated with growth, metamorphosis, and the passage of time.

“I hope audiences can take away a profound experience that encourages introspection, reflection on human emotion, the fleeting nature of nostalgia, and an exploration of the intricate shades of existence. I hope my viewers are able to break free from the mundane and embark on a chromatic voyage mirroring the hues of their own lives,” says Cabanalan. “I experimented with layering techniques to create depth and complexity in my paintings. Mixing acrylic paint with fluorescent colors added vibrancy and a unique touch to my work. Additionally, I incorporated various texturing methods to enhance the tactile quality of my art and give it more dimension. These techniques combined have allowed me to achieve the desired effects and bring my creative vision to life on canvas.”

The path to becoming an artist was not always clear for Cabanalan. His interest in art sparked during his college years through participation in art competitions. The turning point came when he won the grand prize at the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence competition in 2017. Even though he was already a licensed architect, he decided to shift his focus to painting.

Over time, his style and techniques evolved significantly. “When I first started, my work was consistent with what I knew and was comfortable with. For my recent exhibit, however, I decided to experiment with fluorescent paint, which added a vibrant and eye-catching color to my art. I also shifted my focus from my usual green and blues to explore the dynamic range of red, orange, and yellow. This change allowed me to bring new energy and emotions into my art, and it’s been an exciting journey of creative growth,” he shares.

Symbolism was a prominent feature of Cabanalan’s work. When asked about his favorite piece in the exhibit, he did not hesitate to point out Radiate.

“What made it special to me is the unique color palette it features. The combination of vibrant oranges and pinks sets it apart from the rest and gives it a distinct and captivating look. Symbolism plays a crucial role in my art. I often incorporate symbols to convey deeper meanings and emotions in my work. For instance, I frequently use trees as a symbol of growth, hope, and renewal, allowing viewers to connect with themes of optimism and development. Additionally, the use of color red in my pieces may represent various emotions or concepts, adding layers of interpretation to my art,” he says.
