“She relayed that the US is squarely behind their oldest treaty ally (Philippines) when it comes to protecting our sovereignty in the WPS (West Philippine Sea),” Senate President Juan Miguel F. Zubiri said.

Zubiri said Duckworth, a Democrat, made these remarks when she visited him at the Philippine Senate building in Pasay city on Tuesday, August 8.

“Nagkaroon tayo ng napakagandang diskusyon tungkol sa pagtutulungan ng Pilipinas at US sa iba’t ibang sektor (We had a lively discussion on good Philippines-US relations and other sectors)—namely, defense, energy (especially renewable energy), environment, and trade,” he said.

Present during the Duckworth visit were Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda, Senator Francis Tolentino and US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson.

“We thank Senator Duckworth for the visit, and with her support, we hope to forge stronger ties with the US as we go forward,” Zubiri said.
