Feast masses will be celebrated in several parishes in the country.

At the Transfiguration of Christ Parish in San Roque, AntipoloCity, newly installed Diocese of Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos will preside over the fiesta mass at 5 p.m.

At the Lord’s Transfiguration Parish in Angeles City, Pampanga, San Fernando Archbishop Florentino Lavarias will preside over a fiesta mass at 7 a.m. San Fernando Bishop Emeritus Paciano B. Aniceto meanwhile will lead the fiesta mass at 9:30 a.m.

Novena masses were held from July 28 to August 5.

The Transfiguration, a story told in the New Testament, took place on Mount Tabor in Galilee. It marked the culmination of Jesus’ public life, as His baptism marked its beginning, and His Ascension, its end.

Witnessed by three of Jesus’ apostles, Saints Peter, James, and John, “Jesus suddenly became radiant and was seen speaking with Moses, the symbol of the law, and Elijah, the symbol of the prophets. A bright cloud appeared overhead and a voice was heard, ‘This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him,” paralleling a similar event during His baptism.

Aside from the Catholic Church, many Christian traditions, including the Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglican churches, commemorate the event in the Feast of the Transfiguration, a major festival. In Greek Orthodoxy, the event is called the metamorphosis.
