Brillante Mendoza’s ‘Moro’ selected for competition at 28th Busan Int’l Film Festival


The 28th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea has selected Filipino director Brillante Mendoza’s film for competition. 

To be held from Oct. 4 to 13, the BIFF revealed this year’s selections for the New Currents and Jiseok competitions sections for Asian films.

The BIFF selected 10 films for the New Currents and 10 films for the Jiseok competition. 

The Jiseok is a section established by BIFF in 2022 as tribute to the late program director Kim Jiseok. The section confers the Kim Jiseok Award to two films. 

Mendoza’s “Moro,” a tragic drama, has been selected for competition in the Jiseok section of BIFF. He won the Kim Jiseok Award at BIFF in 2021 for this film “Gensan Punch.” 

The 10 films selected for BIFF’s Jiseok section are: 

1. 24 Hours with Gaspar -  Yosep Anggi Noen (Indonesia)

2. At the End of the Film - Ahn Sunkyoung (Korea)

3. Blesser -  Lee Sangcheol (Korea)

4. Bride Kidnapping - Mirlan Abdykalykov (Kyrgyzstan)

5. Doi Boy - Nontawat Numbenchapol  (Thailand/Cambodia) 

6. Ichiko - Toda Akihiro (Japan)

7. Moro - Brillante Mendoza (Philippines)

8. Paradise - Prasanna Vithanage (Sri Lanka/India) 

9. Something Like an Autobiography - Mostofa Sarwar Farooki (Bangladesh)

10. The Moon - Ishii Yuya (Japan)

On the other hand, the New Currents, a main competition section at BIFF, presents “first or second features by up-and-coming Asian filmmakers.” Two films will be given the New Currents Award. 

The 10 films selected for the New Currents section are:

3. Heritage - Lee Jong-su (Korea) 

4. Oasis of Now - Chia Chee Sum (Malaysia/Singapore/France) 

5. September 1923 - Mori Tatsuya (Japan)

6. Solids by the Seashore - Patiparn Boontarig (Thailand)

7. That Summer's Lie - Sohn Hyun-lok (Korea)

8. The Spark - Rajesh S. Jala (India)

9. The Stranger - Biplob Sarkar (Bangladesh)

10. The Wrestler - Iqbal H. Chowdhury (Bangladesh/Canada)
